Keeping Your Child Out Late? Check These Tips!
Summertime is here so for most families that means you may be out past your kiddos (& your) regular bedtime from time to time.
Whether it's for sports, a family gathering, a neighbours BBQ, or you just want to enjoy some more outside time with the fam, it can be done - without stress and anxiety.
If you know ahead of time that you will be keeping your kiddos up later than usual I’ve got some tips for you!
allow your child to sleep more during the day
for example: if they are on more than one nap (typically under 16 months), don’t wake them from their naps, let them sleep up to 2 hours for each nap
if they're on one nap, let them nap up to 3-3.5 hours
if it's feasible, bring a pack n' play and see if it's an option to put your child to sleep where ever it is you're going
if this is an option, also packing a sound machine, sleep sack and SlumberPod (use my discount to save - starlightsleepco) is always a good idea
HAVE FUN & let go of expectations
sure your child may express their overtiredness, but it likely doesn’t happen very often so let go of the expectations and enjoy yourself
Some families feel that having an overtired child is not worth it for them and that is totally ok too. You have to do what is best for you and your family.
I wouldn't recommend missing your child's bedtime on a regular basis, but once in awhile, especially during the summer months will not ruin your good little sleeper. Just remember, whether you're putting them to bed late or if it's at someone else's house DO NOT skip the bedtime routine. The routine is key to having your child fall asleep easier, especially if they're overtired. You can do a shortened, condensed version, but I don’t recommend skipping altogether UNLESS they’re already sleeping and you’re just transferring them when you get home.
You may also experience night wakes or early mornings, but if it's not done frequently it won't take too long for them to adjust back to their norm.
That’s it! Enjoy your summer and don’t stress about keeping your kiddo up late. Plan to have a low-stimulating day the following day to allow your child some time to recuperate - you’ll probably need it too.
Happy Summer!
